Marseille - photos 2

One of the best parts of being in a new city is wondering around enjoying the beauty and the differences. Marseille is also famous for its graffiti. And it's currently going through a major facelift so many of the streets are being repaved.

It's all wonderfully chaotic, sunny and colourful.

And then there are the Calanques along the coast - an opportunity to get out to sea.

And looking out at our street at nights...

And of course we had to be Famous Models ... part 3!

Marseille - photos 1

Marseille is a stunning place to visit. And I intend to visit again, two weeks was not long enough! This post is mainly photos - wouldn't you love to be there??

First of all - Notre Dame de la Garde. It is so beautiful and overlooks the city.

You can walk up the hill, or take the little train as it has great views of the coast and the streets as you make your way up the hill. And remember, if it's too hot for the dog to walk ...

And there's the older Abbaye ...
So dark and bleakly beautiful.

And the Palais Longchamps...
An oasis in the middle of the city.

And of course there are a lot of boats!

So let's wander around the city, and get out on the water ... part 2!

Marseille and the fabrics

Well this has been interesting. I may be returning empty-handed!!

I've followed up all my leads but still haven't found any fabrics that I want to bring back. I have been inspired by a couple of things I've seen but they haven't been quite right. But based on what I've been advised I've found some of what I'm looking for online, and have made a couple of orders that may get home before me.

No luck on the Toile de Jouy front yet though. But we did do an amazing photoshoot of my original dress. And I still have two more to embroider when I get back.

My Paris favourite La Droguerie has a branch here and I did get a couple of little inspiration pieces. And check out their floor - it's made of buttons!!

But back to the slog ...

And I really thought I'd found gold here (a toile de jouy lookalike)  but it wasn't right, sigh. But the nice man told me about a possible web supply which led me to something else good!

Most of the fabrics I've encountered have been polyester and other man-made fabrics. It seems a bit odd since it is so warm here. And as we know it's important to wear cottons and linens when it's hot!

And a cold cider is pretty good too. It may be hard work for little reward but being an Intrepid Fabric Hunter in a crazy city that's full of roadworks is a lot of fun.

Marseille 2

I work and I work!! But is it really work when you love it? I'm in another city being an Intrepid Fabric Hunter, and Brodeuse.

Step 1: Research!
I had no time to plan before coming here so after a couple of days getting over the flights (all late and chaotic), I got on to it. It should have been easy - go to marché de la Plaine on the correct days and all the fabrics will be there. BUT this is the area of Marseille that has been closed down. Eeek, I will have do lots more work:

Downstairs there was also lots of work going on!

I am also working on some new embroideries. This is my new work space - just stitching and watching the world go by outside my windows.

The parking here is definitely bump style. Just back up until you bump, forward until you bump, and repeat as long as it takes.

More fun on the street - park in middle of street, throw boxes as fast as poss, and drive away when the people stuck behind get too loud.

And sometimes it does rain.

Love this place.

Marseille!!

Bonjour. I've finally made it to Marseille. I love it. Here's a quick look around so far. First up the iconic Notre Dame de la Garde keeping watch over the city.

The weather is mild, mid 20s most days, and mainly sunny.

Marseille is on the coast, so lots of sailing going on here, and a bit of posing!

This rubbish bin has the best view:

And it is also the city of graffiti...

And some very peaceful places:

I've met a few new wines:

And one of the local foods, les panisses (chickpea fries), yay Gluten Free!

And of course we have all the coffees ...
